The scales grew first,
Covering my soft skin.
For the first time in my life,
I was gorgeously green and armoured.
I didn’t know what was happening at the time, but
The power of it was astounding.
The wings grew next,
Bursting out of my shoulder blades,
Dripping and shimmering with blood and gold,
Filling the space around me with the airiness of their presence.
I didn’t know what was happening at the time, but
I knew that
I would never be lonely again.
For the first time,
I flew.
In the sky, I saw my reflection in a star,
And
I knew what had happened to me.
I had turned into a dragon.
Fire burned inside.
